Man accused in five cases killed in Pabna ‘gunfight’

A suspected criminal has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Sadar upazila’s Shibrampur area of Pabna. The incident took place in Shibrampur’s swiss gate area in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Tanjib, 30, son of Babu Sheikh, of Ramchandrapur.

Police arrested Tanjib from Library Bazar around 10:30pm, the news agency quoted Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, superintendent of Pabna police as saying. He was a fugitive wanted in five criminal cases, said the SP.

Police say more, the gunfight took place at Battala Mor of Charshibrampur embankment of Sadar police station around 3:15 am.

Tipped off, a team of law enforcers conducted a drive in the area this morning, said Rafiqul Islam, superintendent of police in Pabna.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on law enforcers, forcing them to take action in self defence, he said.

At one stage, Tanjib was shot and his cohorts managed to flee the scene.

He was later taken to Pabna Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead at 4:00 am, the police officer said.

Police recovered four rounds of bullets, a pistol, a revolver, and two rounds of cartridges from the spot, he added. Filing of a case is underway, police said.
