Lighter ship sinks in Karnaphuli River

A lighter ship carrying 2,200 tonnes of scrap sank in Karnaphuli River early Wednesday at Sadarghat area Chattogram Port after it clashed with a buoy early Wednesday.

The ship named MV Barnia Prince-2 sank at around 1:30am, Belayet Hossain, proprietor of Nippon Shipping Trading.

Two private companies — Genuine Enterprise and Air Enterprise – reached the spot at around 10:00am and are working to rescue the ship.

All 12 crew members of the vessel — Borni Prince-2 — were rescued by staff of another lighter vessel crossing the river, said Ataul Karim, general secretary of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
