The government is going to launch special open market sale (OMS) of rice at the rate of Tk 10 per kg at all city corporation areas of the country in a bid to ensure face for relatively poor people during the nationwide shutdown to face coronavirus transmission.
Special OMS programme, meant for providing rice to people at relatively low prices, will be initiated soon at all city corporation areas across the country,” said Sarwar Mahmud, Director of the of Food Directorate. The special open market sale or OMS will begin in Mirpur’s Rupnagar Jheelpar slum and Mohakhali’s Shattola slum.
Under the programme, the staple will be sold from 10am to 3pm. Each consumer with a valid NID card can buy up to 5kg of rice once a week, the ministry said.
The Ministry of Food issued a notice in this regard on Thursday asking the authorities concerned to implement the directive so that low-income people including labourers, rickshaw and van pullers, transport workers, hawkers, tea sellers, beggars, vagabonds and third gender people get the benefit.
The scheme will later be expanded to Upazilas, according to food officials.
The programme will be overseen by the district administration, local city councillors, law-enforcement personnel and food officials.
The Dhaka Rationing Office of the food directorate will distribute the rice among OMS dealers.
