Almost 9,000 members of police infected with COVID-19

With 304 police personnel testing positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the total number of infected in the force jumped to 8,848 in the country.

Besides, 31 policemen have so far lost their battle against coronavirus while 5,408 made full recovery, said sources at the Police headquarters.

Among the coronavirus-infected police members, 2,120 are from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) alone, AKM Kamrul Ahsan, Public Relation Officer of Police Headquarters, told media.

Around 9,375 police officials remain in quarantine and 450 others in isolation, as they either showed Covid-19 symptoms or came in contact with positive persons.

Most of the recovered policemen have joined their respective duty stations after recovery, he added.

Frontline coronavirus fighters like doctors, members of police, Armed Forces and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and other agencies have been getting affected while performing duties across the country. They have been jointly working to ensure social distancing alongside distributing relief materials.

To cope with the worsening situation, Bangladesh Police last month hired 250-bed Impulse Hospital in the capital for the treatment of coronavirus-infected police members.

Bangladesh on Sunday recorded 39 deaths from coronavirus in the span of 24 hours, raising the death toll to 1,464.

The number of total COVID-19 patients also surged to 112,306 to as the health authorities confirmed the detection of 3,531 new cases across the country during the same period, according to the daily bulletin of of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
